In a historic breakthrough, doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) successfully conducted the world’s first real-time tele-ultrasound test on volunteers at India’s Antarctic research station Maitri, revolutionising healthcare access in extreme and remote environments.

  • About: Tele-Ultrasound is an advanced form of telemedicine where diagnostic ultrasound scans are performed remotely by specialists using robotics and communication networks. A doctor controls a robotic probe from a distant location while live imaging is transmitted instantly.
      • The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) successfully conducted the world’s first live Tele-Robotic Ultrasonography (TRUS) demonstration on volunteers located nearly 12,000–14,000 km away at India’s Antarctic research base Maitri Research Station
      • It demonstrated that specialist radiological care can be delivered across continents, especially in regions with limited healthcare infrastructure, extreme cold and geographical isolation.
  • Institutional Collaboration: This national-level innovation was developed jointly by AIIMS Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, I‑Hub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC), National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital.
  • Earlier Trials: The technology was originally developed during the COVID-19 pandemic (2021–22) to enable contactless diagnostics in infectious environments. Subsequent clinical feasibility trials confirmed that high-quality ultrasound imaging could be conducted remotely.
  • Technology Used: Doctors used a haptic control device whose hand movements were replicated by a robotic arm holding an ultrasound probe at the Antarctic station. A critical innovation is force-sensing/force feedback, which allows the doctor in Delhi to “feel” resistance as the probe presses against the patient’s body. 
  • Demonstration: Using satellite-based internet connectivity, the system transmitted real-time imaging data back to AIIMS for interpretation. The test demonstrated procedures like abdominal scans, FAST trauma scans, echocardiography and Doppler studies remotely.

Applications of Tele‑Ultrasound Technology (TUS)

  • Agricultural and Rural Livelihood Support: In widely dispersed rural areas where specialists are unavailable, tele‑ultrasound ensures prenatal care and reproductive health monitoring for humans and livestock alike. Tele‑ultrasound programs in rural South Korea boosted early fetal anomaly detection by ~42% and reduced unnecessary transfers by over 30%, enhancing both public health and local healthcare sustainability. 
  • Education, Training and Skill Transfer: Tele‑ultrasound is increasingly used in remote training environments, connecting urban experts with trainees in underserved regions. Studies show even novice operators, under remote guidance, can acquire diagnostically valid images over distances > 750 km, expanding diagnostic capacity and skills transfer.

Maitri Research Station

  • Maitri Research Station, established on 26 January 1989 in the Schirmacher Oasis area of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
  • It is India’s second and one of its most strategically important research facilities on the frozen continent. 
  • It was developed to succeed the earlier Dakshin Gangotri station, which became unusable due to snow burial, and has been operational year‑round since its inception. 
  • Located approximately 100 km inland from the Antarctic coast at an elevation of about 50 m above sea level, Maitri occupies an ice‑free rocky plateau adjacent to Lake Priyadarshini.
  • The base accommodates about 25 personnel during winter and roughly 40 in the summer months, with modular living quarters, laboratories and essential infrastructure for scientific work. 
  • Maitri serves as a hub for multidisciplinary research programmes in geology, glaciology, atmospheric sciences, meteorology, seismology, microbiology and environmental studies. 
  • The station’s satellite communication systems maintain continuous data links with India, enabling real‑time coordination for international scientific collaborations under the Antarctic Treaty System
  • In recent years, India has announced plans to modernise and progressively replace the aging Maitri with a state‑of‑the‑art facility called Maitri‑II by 2029, capable of supporting enhanced scientific operations.
