Why in News? 

Recently, India created history by winning their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times and successfully defend the title under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.

Highlights of 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

  • Tournament: The 10th edition of the T20 World Cup was co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026.
  • Twenty teams competed in a total of 55 matches, showcasing global expansion as Italy made their tournament debut. 
      • Matches were played across eight venues, including major stadiums in India and Sri Lanka.

  • Semi-finalists: England and South Africa 
    • Semi-Final: In the first semi-final, New Zealand defeated South Africa after a stunning performance from Finn Allen, who scored a 33-ball century, the fastest hundred in T20 World Cup history. 
      • India reached the final after defeating England by 7 runs in a thrilling semi-final. The match highlighted India’s ability to defend totals under pressure.
  • Final Match: The final took place on March 8, 2026, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad between India and New Zealand.
      • India post a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, one of the highest totals ever in a T20 World Cup final. New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, giving India a 96-run victory
      • The innings was anchored by Sanju Samson, who smashed 89 off 46 balls, the highest individual score in T20 World Cup final history.
      • Opener Abhishek Sharma provided an explosive start, reaching his half-century in just 18 balls. This feat set the record for the fastest fifty ever recorded in final. 
      • Jasprit Bumrah delivered a clinical performance, finishing with figures of 4/15. He was ably supported by Axar Patel, who claimed 3 wickets.
      • In pursuit of 256, New Zealand struggled against a disciplined attack. Tim Seifert was the lone warrior, scoring a gritty 52 off 26 balls.
  • Player of the Match: Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match for his match-defining spell in the final. His ability to take early wickets and bowl lethal yorkers at the death proved insurmountable for New Zealand. 
  • Player of the Tournament: Sanju Samson was awarded Player of the Tournament. He amassed 321 runs across five crucial matches at a staggering strike rate of 199.37, consistently delivering in high-pressure knockout stages. 
  • Other Records: India became the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cups (2024 and 2026) and the first to win a title on home soil. They now hold a record three T20 World Cup titles. 
    • Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan finished as the leading run-scorer with 383 runs in 6 innings. He also became the first player to hit two centuries in a single T20 World Cup edition. 
    • Italy recorded its first-ever T20 World Cup win by defeating Nepal by 10 wickets.
    • Zimbabwe pulled off a shock 23-run victory against Australia, contributing to Australia’s early exit before the Super Eight.

India’s Journey in ICC International Tournaments

    • Total ICC Trophy: Across men’s, women’s, and youth competitions, India has won around 15 ICC titles, placing the country among the most successful cricket nations globally.
    • First ICC Title: India’s global rise started under Kapil Dev, when the team defeated the mighty West Indies in the 1983 ODI World Cup final at Lord’s. This victory ended West Indies’ dominance and marked India’s first ICC championship.
      • India lifted its second ODI World Cup in 2011, defeating Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Captain MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 91 sealed the win, making India the first host nation to win the ODI World Cup final
    • T20 Revolution: India won the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007, defeating Pakistan in the final under MS Dhoni’s leadership. The victory popularized T20 cricket and contributed to the launch of domestic leagues like the IPL. 
      • India won the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa by 7 runs at Kensington Oval, Barbados. This victory marked India’s second T20 World Cup title. 
    • Champions Trophy: India has been highly successful in the ICC Champions Trophy, winning three titles (2002, 2013, 2025). The 2002 title was shared with Sri Lanka, while the 2013 victory under Dhoni made him the only captain to win all three major ICC white-ball trophies. 
  • U-19 World Cups: India has dominated youth cricket, winning multiple ICC Under‑19 Cricket World Cup titles (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018, 2022). These victories produced future stars like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Yuvraj Singh.
  • Women’s Victory: India’s women’s team achieved a landmark success by winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. It was India’s first senior women’s ICC title.
    • India also excelled in the ICC Women’s Under‑19 T20 World Cup, winning the 2023 and 2025 editions, showcasing the growing strength of women’s cricket in the country. 
  • Legendary Players: Icons like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Mithali Raj, and Harmanpreet Kaur have played crucial roles in India’s ICC successes across different formats and generations.
