Why in News? 

Recently, the launch of Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station was delayed again due to poor weather conditions. The mission is now expected to lift off on June 11 at 5:30 PM IST. 

  • This marks the third delay, as earlier launch plans on May 29, June 8, and June 10 were also rescheduled.
What is Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)?
  • About the Mission:
      • Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) marks the fourth privately operated human spaceflight to the International Space Station (ISS), organized by the US-based company Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX
      • Unlike traditional government-led missions, Ax-4 represents a new era of space travel where commercial companies manage crewed missions for research, development, and international collaboration. 
      • The mission intends to utilize SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket to launch the Crew Dragon C213 spacecraft into low Earth orbit. 
        • This spacecraft, being the fifth and final in the Crew Dragon series, will make its maiden flight with Ax-4. 
        • It will serve as a bridge between today’s ISS operations and the future of fully commercial orbital stations.
  • Time Duration and Launch Schedule:
      • The mission is currently targeted for launch no earlier than June 2025, with the exact timing to be finalized depending on launch conditions and weather. 
      • As per the current plan, the liftoff will occur from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. 
      • The mission duration is projected to be between 14 to 21 days
      • During this time, the crew will engage in numerous scientific experiments, technology tests, and outreach efforts while aboard the ISS. 
      • The spacecraft is expected to return to Earth with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, with recovery operations conducted near either Los Angeles, Oceanside, or San Diego. 
      • The return will be managed by the recovery vessel MV Shannon.
  • Crew Members:
    • Ax-4 will carry a diverse crew of four astronauts from four different nations.
      • Commander: Peggy Whitson (United States) – A veteran astronaut affiliated with Axiom Space, Whitson brings her vast spaceflight experience to lead this mission. Ax-4 marks her fifth journey into space.
      • Pilot: Shubhanshu Shukla (India) – Shukla, flying on behalf of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), will be the first Indian to reach the ISS and only the second Indian to travel to space since Rakesh Sharma in 1984.
      • Mission Specialist 1: Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Poland) – As a project astronaut from the European Space Agency and Polish Space Agency (POLSA), Uznański will be Poland’s first astronaut in over 45 years, with the last being part of the Soviet Interkosmos mission in 1978.
      • Mission Specialist 2: Tibor Kapu (Hungary) – Serving as Hungary’s representative through its Space Office, Kapu will be the nation’s first astronaut post the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Objectives of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)

  • Scientific Research in Microgravity: The crew will carry out experiments in life sciences, material behavior, and environmental studies under microgravity. These experiments could provide insights into medical treatments, new materials, and Earth observation techniques.
  • Technology Demonstration: As part of its R&D goals, Ax-4 will test new tools, hardware, and software meant for space applications. These trials are essential for future private missions and Axiom’s planned commercial space station.

Key Features of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)

  • Reusable Spacecraft: The Crew Dragon C213 is designed for reuse, marking a step toward sustainable space travel. Its adaptability reduces mission costs and environmental impact over time.
  • Falcon 9 Launch Vehicle: Falcon 9 Block 5 (B1094.2) serves as the launch vehicle, delivering the necessary thrust to propel the Dragon spacecraft into orbit. It will also return for a vertical landing, reflecting SpaceX’s advancements in reusability.
  • Multi-National Crew: For the first time, astronauts from the USA, India, Poland, and Hungary are flying together on a private spaceflight, indicating the growing global interest in commercial space participation.
  • Preparation for Axiom Station: Ax-4 is more than a single mission—it serves as a testbed for Axiom’s bigger goal of creating Axiom Station, the first commercial space station to eventually replace the ISS.
  • Public and Private Collaboration: The mission showcases a strong model of cooperation between government agencies (NASA, ESA, ISRO, POLSA, HSO) and private industry leaders.
  • Recovery Operations: The return of the spacecraft will involve precision tracking and retrieval near the western U.S. coastline. Recovery processes are designed to ensure both crew safety and rapid reusability of mission assets.

Significance of Axiom Mission 4 for India

  • First Indian Astronaut on a Commercial ISS Mission: Axiom Mission 4 marks the first instance of an Indian astronaut participating in a privately operated mission to the International Space Station. Shubhanshu Shukla’s selection for Ax-4 offers India its second human spaceflight. This mission represents a bold move beyond symbolic participation.
  • Early Exposure to Manned Spaceflight: India’s human spaceflight efforts, primarily led by the Gaganyaan programme, are still in developmental stages. By sending an astronaut aboard Ax-4, ISRO gains crucial exposure to complex human spaceflight operations—such as orbital travel, ISS docking, zero-gravity habitation, and re-entry protocols. 
  • Strengthening Indo-US Space Collaboration: India–U.S. space cooperation continues to grow, with Ax-4 emerging as a major milestone in this collaborative trajectory. The seat for the Indian astronaut was secured following an agreement signed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden, highlighting the strategic alignment of both nations in space exploration. 
  • Contribution to Scientific Research: Shubhanshu Shukla will perform a range of scientific experiments in microgravity, including studies on human cognition, microbial changes, muscle degeneration, and plant resilience. These activities will expand India’s space science capabilities. 

The International Space Station (ISS)

  • The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest man-made structure in orbit, jointly developed and operated by NASA (USA), Roscosmos (Russia), ESA (Europe), JAXA (Japan), and CSA (Canada)
  • Its core objective is to serve as a research facility in microgravity.
  • The ISS spans 109 meters in length and 73 meters wide. 
  • It features a truss structure supporting eight pairs of solar arrays and several radiator panels. 
  • With a pressurized volume of 1,005 cubic meters, it accommodates living quarters, laboratories, and docking ports. 
  • The ISS orbits Earth at an average altitude of 413 to 422 kilometers, traveling at a speed of 7.67 km/s, completing 15.5 orbits per day.
  • It was launched in 1998.
  • The station has been continuously inhabited since 2000, hosting astronauts from around the globe. 
  • As of June 2025, the ISS has been in orbit for over 26 years, completing more than 141,000 orbits
  • Its current crew includes members from missions like SpaceX Crew-10 and Soyuz MS-27, with command under JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi.
