GS Paper 2: Government Policies and Interventions
Why in the News?
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched and implemented the PM Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (PM-YASASVI).
The Prime Minister’s Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (PM-YASASVI) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at uplifting students from socially and economically disadvantaged communities, including Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Backward Classes (EBC), and Denotified Tribes (DNT). By providing access to quality education during the crucial formative years, the scheme seeks to empower these students and help them break the cycle of poverty.
The PM-YASASVI scheme was introduced to consolidate and enhance various pre-existing scholarship programs such as the Dr. Ambedkar Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for EBCs and the Ambedkar Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for DNTs. These earlier initiatives were subsumed under the PM-YASASVI Scheme starting from the academic year 2021-22, creating a more streamlined and effective approach to addressing the educational needs of these vulnerable groups.
Objective of PM-YASASVI
The primary goal of the PM-YASASVI scheme is to promote educational empowerment by removing financial barriers that hinder students from disadvantaged communities from completing their education. By focusing on their education, the scheme aims to open doors for these students to opportunities that would otherwise remain out of reach.
Scholarship Benefits
Under the PM-YASASVI Scheme, students can avail scholarships for both Pre-Matric (Classes 9 to 10) and Post-Matric education (for higher studies after the 10th standard). These scholarships provide crucial financial support, ensuring that students can continue their education without the burden of expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
- Pre-Matric Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students in Classes IX and X who are attending government schools.
- Income Limit: The family income of the student must be below ₹2.5 lakh per annum to be eligible.
Implementing Agency
The scheme is implemented by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, which is part of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. This department is responsible for ensuring that the scholarship funds reach eligible students and that the scheme is implemented effectively across the country.
Conclusion:
Through its targeted approach, PM-YASASVI is not just a scholarship program; it is a comprehensive strategy to uplift marginalized communities by investing in their educational growth and helping them achieve their potential.
