Highlights of Khelo India Tribal Games 2026

  • About: The Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 is the first national multi-sport event dedicated exclusively to tribal athletes in India to integrate them into the national sports ecosystem, and promote inclusive development through sports.
  • Host State: The inaugural edition of the Games will be hosted in Chhattisgarh, a state with a large tribal population.
    • The main venue is Late B. R. Yadav Sports Stadium in Bilaspur, where several events and ceremonies will be organized.
    • The Games are scheduled to begin from March 25 to April 6, 2026 across Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja, under the Khelo India Programme
  • Organising Authorities: The event is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India, national sports federations, and the Chhattisgarh state government
  • Objective: The primary objective is to identify, nurture and promote tribal sporting talent across India. It also seeks to provide professional training, exposure, and scholarships to talented athletes discovered during the event.
  • Mascot: The official mascot of the Games is “Morveer.” The name combines “Mor” (our own) and “Veer” (bravery), symbolizing tribal pride, courage, and identity within India’s sporting culture.
  • Participation: Participation is restricted to athletes belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities from across India. Athletes must present valid ST certificates and identity documents during selection trials and registration.
    • Over 5,000 athletes from across India are expected to participate. They represent various Ethnic groups and states with high tribal populations, such as Jharkhand, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Sports: The inaugural Games will feature seven competitive sports disciplines: archery, athletics, football, hockey, wrestling, swimming, and weightlifting
    • Apart from competitive events, two demonstration sports like Mallakhamba and Kabbadi, will also be showcased to preserve indigenous games.
  • Scholarships: Gold medalists and elite performers may receive monthly stipends. Under the Khelo India Scheme, top talents are eligible for an annual scholarship of ₹5 lakh for eight years.

Significance of Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG)

  • Expanding Representation: The KITG 2026 significantly expands representation of Scheduled Tribe (ST) athletes in national competitions. According to India’s census data, ST communities constitute about 8.6% of the population (over 104 million people), yet their participation in organized national sports events remains relatively limited. Dedicated games ensure systematic inclusion of tribal youth in competitive sports structures.
  • Promotion of Sports: Selection trials for the Games are being conducted in multiple states and union territories, including regions such as Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Jammu & Kashmir, demonstrating the programme’s reach into geographically isolated tribal areas. These decentralized trials encourage grassroots participation and regional sports development.
  • Encouraging Women’s Participation: The initiative also promotes gender inclusion in sports among tribal communities. For example, during selection trials in Raipur, 203 women out of 558 athletes participated across sports disciplines, indicating rising female representation in competitive athletics from tribal backgrounds.
  • Boosting Sports Infrastructure: Hosting the Games in Chhattisgarh, a state with a large tribal population, encourages investment in sports infrastructure, training facilities, and coaching systems in tribal-dominated districts. Improved stadiums, training centres, and sports academies created for the event will provide long-term benefits for local athletes.
Khelo India Programme

  • Launch: The Khelo India Programme was launched in 2016–17 by the Government of India as a flagship national initiative for sports development under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
    • It aims to promote “Sports for All” and “Sports for Excellence”, integrating grassroots participation with elite athlete development across rural and urban India.
  • Financial Outlay: The programme initially received ₹1,756 crore for 2017–2020, later extended in 2021 with an outlay of ₹3,790.50 crore for five years.
    • In Union Budget 2025–26, the flagship programme received about ₹1,000 crore allocation within the sports ministry budget.
  • Scholarship: A major component is the Pan-India Sports Scholarship Scheme. Each year around 1,000 talented athletes are selected and provided ₹5 lakh per year for eight years, covering training, equipment, coaching, diet, and competition exposure.
  • Youth Fitness: The programme also focuses on mass physical fitness. It targets nearly 200 million children aged 10–18 years through school-based fitness assessments and sporting activities, encouraging healthy lifestyles.
  • Sports Infrastructure: As of recent government data, 326 sports infrastructure projects worth over ₹3,124 crore have been approved under the scheme, including stadium upgrades, synthetic tracks, and multi-purpose sports halls across states.
  • Training Centres: To ensure continuous training support, the programme has established over 1,045 Khelo India Centres (KICs) across districts. These centres provide local coaching, sports equipment, and training facilities.
  • State Centres of Excellence: The initiative also includes 34 Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs) and over 300 accredited sports academies. These institutions provide advanced training, sports science support, physiotherapy, and nutrition facilities.
  • National Sports Competitions: The programme organizes several major national competitions such as Khelo India Youth Games, University Games, Winter Games, and Para Games
  • Talent Identification: New initiatives like KIRTI (Khelo India Rising Talent Identification) launched in 2024 use digital assessment tools and data-based athlete screening. The programme aims to conduct around 20 lakh fitness assessments nationwide, improving scientific talent.
  • Holistic Development: The programme integrates 12 major verticals, including sports for women, rural and indigenous games promotion, sports for persons with disabilities, and peace through sports
