India Launches BSNL’s ‘Swadeshi-4G Network’

General Studies Paper II: Government policies and interventions, indigenization of technology

Why in News?

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched BSNL’s ‘Swadeshi-4G Network’, giving India a significant boost in telecom technology. This new 4G network strengthens the country’s position in the global telecommunication sector.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) Swadeshi-4G Network

  • About: The Swadeshi-4G Network is India’s first fully homegrown 4G infrastructure, designed to provide high-speed internet connectivity across the nation. On September 27, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated BSNL indigenous Swadeshi-4G Network in Jharsuguda, Odisha. India is the 5th country that manufactured homegrown telecom networks after China, Denmark, Sweden, and South Korea
  • Developed by
      • Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) developed the core network infrastructure.
      • Tejas Networks provided the Radio Access Network (RAN) to facilitate wireless communication between user devices and the core network.
      • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) managed the integration of the network components and deployed the Cognitive Network Operations (CNOPS) platform for real-time network management.
  • Features
  • Indigenous Technology: BSNL’s Swadeshi-4G Network is developed completely from homegrown technology. Its core systems are designed and manufactured in India, ensuring technological self-reliance.
  • Tower Deployment: BSNL commissioned more than 97,500 4G towers (approximately Rs 37,000 crore) across the country in 2025. Among these, 92,600 towers operate on advanced 4G technology.
  • Digital Inclusion: The network connects over 26,700 unconnected villages, including 2,472 villages in Odisha. The network serves more than 20 lakh new subscribers. This supports the Digital India mission.
  • Cloud-Based System: The network is cloud-based, allowing smooth upgrades to 5G in the future. Its modern design ensures scalability and efficient management.
  • Renewable Energy Integration: All towers are solar-powered, making the network environmentally sustainable. It represents India’s largest cluster of green telecom sites. This reduces electricity costs.
  • Empowering Rural Communities: The network brings reliable internet to remote villages. It enables access to online education, telemedicine, and e-governance services.
  • Integration with 5G Plans: The network is designed for a seamless upgrade to 5G, allowing BSNL to provide next-generation services without major infrastructure changes.

Significance of BSNL’s Swadeshi-4G Network

  • Strategic Autonomy: It signifies a pivotal move towards reducing India’s dependence on foreign telecom technology. This indigenous infrastructure will enhance national security by ensuring control over critical communication networks. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ fostering self-reliance in strategic sectors.
  • Employment Generation: The deployment of nearly 98,000 4G towers across India has stimulated significant economic activity. The project has created numerous job opportunities in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance sectors. It has bolstered local economies by promoting the growth of ancillary industries and services.
  • Future-Ready Telecom Infrastructure: The cloud-native, 5G-ready design of the Swadeshi-4G network ensures seamless scalability and future upgrades. This approach positions India to swiftly transition to next-generation telecom technologies, maintaining competitiveness in the global digital landscape and supporting Bharat 6G Project

Bharat 6G Project

  • The Bharat 6G Project is India’s government-led initiative to research, develop, and deploy sixth-generation (6G) communication technology.
  • Its main goal is to prepare India for ultra-high-speed digital networks that are expected to be up to 100 times faster than 5G
  • The project focuses on building a domestic ecosystem for 6G, including the development of devices, network systems, and infrastructure.
  • It also emphasizes sustainability and strategic autonomy, reducing dependence on foreign technology.
  • This project was highlighted in a vision document unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2024
  • The Bharat 6G Project is designed to be implemented in two phases. The first phase runs from 2023 to 2025, focusing on exploring new ideas, testing risky pathways, and conducting proof-of-concept experiments.
  • The second phase, scheduled from 2025 to 2030, aims to scale successful prototypes and prepare the technology for commercial deployment across the country.
  • An apex council has been appointed to oversee the 6G project. The council is tasked with standardisation of the technology and identification of suitable spectrum.
  • The vision document outlines several futuristic applications for 6G:
    • Remote-controlled factories will operate autonomously using real-time data connections.
    • Self-driven cars will communicate continuously with other vehicles and infrastructure for safe navigation.
    • Smart wearables will interact directly with human senses to provide immediate feedback and support health, safety, and productivity.
