What Is Skydiving and Its Science?

  • About: Skydiving is the descent of a person from an aircraft while using a parachute during part or all of the descent.
    • Scientifically, it converts gravitational potential energy from altitude into motion, which is then controlled through aerodynamic forces.
  • Gravity: Once a jumper exits an aircraft, gravity accelerates the body toward Earth.
    • The higher starting altitude represents greater gravitational potential energy, which progressively becomes kinetic energy during descent.
  • Air Resistance: As velocity increases, the surrounding air produces drag, acting opposite to the direction of motion.
    • Body position and surface area therefore strongly influence descent speed and stability.
  • Terminal Velocity: Eventually, aerodynamic drag can balance gravitational force, producing terminal velocity—the equilibrium speed of a falling body through the atmosphere.
    • This terminal velocity settles around 120 mph (193 km/h) for a belly-to-earth orientation.
