Why in News?

Recently, Zohran Mamdani made history by winning the New York City mayoral election, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.

• He became New York City’s first Muslim, first South Asian and the youngest mayor since 1892.
• He will assume office as the city’s mayor on January 1, 2026.

• Election Date: The general election took place on November 4, 2025.

• Candidates: The main contenders in the election for New York City mayor were Zohran Mamdani (Democratic Party), Andrew Cuomo (Independent) and Curtis Sliwa (Republican).

• Participation: The 2025 contest registered a remarkably high turnout for a New York City mayoral race. According to the city’s Board of Elections, over 2 million votes were cast — the highest since the 1969 mayoral election. Early voting and absentee ballots made up a substantial part of the total: around 1.75 million in-person votes and about 124,000 absentee ballots were reported.

• Result: The election results show that Zohran Mamdani earned about 1,036,051 votes, equating to 50.4 % of the vote. Andrew Cuomo earned around 854,995 votes (41.6 %). Curtis Sliwa received approximately 146,137 votes (7.1 %).

• Early Life: Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991 in Kampala, Uganda. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a notable academic who taught government and anthropology at Columbia University. His mother, Mira Nair, is a celebrated filmmaker. When he was about 7 years old, his family settled in New York City. He spent early childhood years in Uganda and South Africa before moving to the United States.

• Education: Mamdani attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York for his secondary education. He then went on to study at Bowdoin College in Maine where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies in 2014. During his college years he co-founded a student chapter for social justice causes.

• Political Journey: In October 2019, Mamdani announced his campaign to represent New York’s 36th State Assembly District in Queens. In June 2020 he defeated a five-term Democratic incumbent to win the primary and secured the seat in November pending no major opposition. He served on multiple assembly committees including those on cities, real property taxation, energy, and election law.
