Natural Gas is one of the most important fossil fuels. Its global reserves are geographically concentrated, shaping global energy security, geopolitics and trade.

What is Natural Gas?

  • About: Natural gas is a fossil fuel and naturally occurring gaseous hydrocarbon mixture, found mainly in underground geological formations.
    • Its principal component is methane (CH₄), accompanied by smaller quantities of ethane, propane, butane, and non-hydrocarbon gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour.
  • Formation: Natural gas originates primarily from ancient organic matter buried beneath sediments and subjected to high temperature and pressure over geological timescales.
    • It may occur with crude oil (associated gas) or independently in gas-bearing formations (non-associated gas). 
    • Conventional gas generally accumulates where migrating hydrocarbons become trapped beneath an impermeable geological seal.
  • Sources: Natural gas resources include conventional gas, shale gas, coal-bed methane (CBM) and tight gas.
    • Shale gas and tight gas are generally considered unconventional resources because extraction requires specialised techniques. 
    • CBM is methane occurring within coal seams. 
    • Gas can also be classified as associated or non-associated, depending on its relationship with petroleum deposits.
  • Processing: Raw natural gas requires processing to remove water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and other impurities and to separate valuable natural-gas liquids.
    • For long-distance transport, it can be converted into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) by cooling it to approximately −162°C, reducing its volume substantially.
    • For vehicle use, it can be compressed as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
  • Uses: Natural gas is used for electricity generation, fertiliser production, industrial heating, petrochemicals, household cooking and transport.
    • It is particularly important for the fertiliser sector, where gas is a major feedstock for ammonia and urea production.
      • Natural gas is traded by calorific value rather than volume, with sales measured in MMBTUs. One MMBTU roughly equals 1,000 cubic feet of gas.
  • Environmental Significance: Natural gas generally produces less CO₂ per unit of energy than coal when combusted, making it potentially useful in the energy transition.
    • However, it remains a fossil fuel, and methane leakage during production, processing and transportation is a major environmental concern because methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas
    • The IEA estimates that natural-gas activities accounted for about 34 Mt of methane emissions in 2025.

Global Distribution of Natural Gas Reserves

  • Global Reserve: Global proven natural gas reserves stand at roughly 7,300 to 7,700 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). These reserves are highly concentrated, with the top 10 countries controlling approximately 83% of the world’s total supply.
  • Regional Distribution: The global geographic distribution of natural gas is highly asymmetric:
    • Middle East and Eurasia hold a massive share of conventional gas resources.
      • The Middle East’s dominance is anchored by giant offshore structures, while Eurasia relies heavily on terrestrial Siberian basins.
    • In Europe, Dutch coast and the North Sea (off the coast of Norway) have proven reserves.
    • North America has experienced massive growth over the last two decades. This is primarily driven by advanced extraction technology in shale formations.
    • Africa and Latin America contain highly localized, under-explored hotspots that are structurally important for regional energy dynamics.
    • The largest gas field in Asia is in the North Sumatra basin of Indonesia.
  • Proven Reserves: Proven reserves are the estimated quantities of natural gas that companies can recover with high certainty using today’s technology and market prices. Top countries:
    • Russia (~1,688 Tcf): Holds the world’s largest national stockpile. Most deposits are concentrated across the West Siberian Basin and the Yamal Peninsula.
    • Iran (~1,200 Tcf): Possesses the second-largest reserves. It holds a dominant share of the giant offshore South Pars field in the Persian Gulf.
      • On August 23, 2026, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad announced a major natural gas discovery containing over 7.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in the southern Fars Province.
    • Qatar (~843 Tcf): Controls the North Field (the contiguous extension of South Pars). This positioning fuels its status as a premier Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) global exporter.
    • United States (~603–615 Tcf): Fueled by the shale revolution. Notable fields include the Marcellus, Permian, and Haynesville formations, transforming the nation into a top global supplier.
    • Saudi Arabia (~336 Tcf): Reserves are historically distributed across associated gas fields (found alongside crude oil), though unconventional gas development is accelerating.
    • Turkmenistan (~265 Tcf): Home to the massive Galkynysh gas field, primarily exporting via dedicated pipeline infrastructure eastward to China.
    • United Arab Emirates (~215 Tcf): Features significant associated reservoirs and recent massive shallow-water discoveries between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
    • Venezuela (~201 Tcf): Boasts the largest reserves in Latin America, mostly associated with its heavy oil belts.
    • Nigeria (~187 Tcf): Represents the largest gas province in Africa, centered around the Niger Delta basin.
  • Natural Gas Fields: A natural gas field is an underground area containing a large accumulation of hydrocarbon-rich natural gas. Major Natural Gas Fields:
    • South Pars / North Dome (Iran and Qatar): Holds roughly 1,230 to 1,800 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable gas in the Persian Gulf.
    • Urengoy (Russia): Located in Siberia, it is the largest onshore natural gas field globally with about 222 Tcf.
    • Yamburg (Russia): Also situated in West Siberia, holding an estimated 138 Tcf.
    • Bovanenkovo (Russia): Found on the Yamal Peninsula, containing roughly 140 Tcf.
    • Hassi R’Mel (Algeria): The largest gas field in Africa, located in the Sahara Desert with about 123 Tcf.
    • Galkynysh (Turkmenistan): A supergiant onshore field holding an estimated 98 to 200 Tcf.
  • Leading Producers:
    • United States: The world’s top producer, driven by advanced shale extraction and fracking.
    • Russia: A top global producer and historical pipeline supplier to neighboring regions.
    • Iran and China: Large producers scaling output to satisfy growing domestic energy needs.
    • Qatar and Australia: Major global exporters of liquefied natural gas.

Natural Gas Reserves and Fields in India

  • Resource Base: India possesses substantial but unevenly distributed recoverable natural-gas resources.
    • The Government of India has reported 1,138.6 billion cubic metres (BCM) of recoverable natural gas within the country’s sedimentary basins
    • India’s gas production has an important offshore component.
    • India holds approximately 40 Trillion Cubic Feet (Tcf) of proven natural gas reserves, accounting for roughly 0.5% to 0.7% of the total global share. 
    • This volume positions India 23rd globally in terms of proven reserves.
  • Geographical Distribution: India’s gas occurrences are closely associated with its sedimentary basins, both onshore and offshore.
    • DGH has mapped and assessed 26 sedimentary basins, covering approximately 50% of India’s onland area and 73% of its offshore area within the EEZ
    • Major producing/prospective regions are Mumbai Offshore, Krishna-Godavari, Assam-Arakan, Cambay, Cauvery and Rajasthan
  • Major Fields:
    • Mumbai Offshore Basin: One of India’s most important hydrocarbon provinces; major offshore fields include Bassein & Satellite (B&S), with ONGC being a major operator.
      • In FY 2024-25, Mumbai Basin contributed 14.463 BCM of ONGC gas production, making it the largest gas-producing basin in ONGC’s nomination portfolio.
    • Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin: Located mainly along the Andhra Pradesh coast and offshore Bay of Bengal, it contains important gas discoveries, including KG-DWN-98/3 (KG-D6) operated by Reliance Industries/BP.
      • ONGC also produced 0.975 BCM from the basin in FY 2024-25. 
    • Assam-Arakan Basin: Northeastern India’s historic petroleum province, particularly important around Assam. OIL and ONGC remain significant producers; OIL produced 2.972 BCM from the Assam-Arakan Shelf in FY 2024-25.
    • Cambay Basin: Primarily spread across Gujarat, it is one of India’s established onshore hydrocarbon provinces. ONGC produced 0.810 BCM of gas from Cambay in FY 2024-25. 
    • Cauvery Basin: Extends across parts of Tamil Nadu and adjoining offshore areas, with both conventional exploration and offshore prospects.
    • Rajasthan Basin: Primarily known for oil production but also contributes natural gas; private operators produced 1.544 BCM in FY 2024-25.
  • Exploration The Government has targeted expansion of exploration acreage to 1 million sq km by 2030.
    • Under Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP), new blocks are being offered across basins including Krishna-Godavari, Mumbai Offshore, Cauvery, Mahanadi, Andaman-Nicobar, Bengal-Purnea and Saurashtra
    • Oil India Limited (OIL) reported a new natural-gas discovery in the Dandewala Field of Rajasthan in May 2026.
      • Preliminary geological and petrophysical assessment estimated Gas In Place (GIP) at approximately 75 million standard cubic metres (MMSCM).
    • State-owned Oil India Limited discovered natural gas at the Shri Vijayapuram-3 (Sri Vijayapuram-3) exploratory well, Andaman Sea Offshore.
  • Importance:
    • Natural gas is important for diversifying India’s energy basket, which remains heavily dependent on coal and oil.
      • The Government aims to increase natural gas’s share in the primary energy mix from about 6.7% to 15% by 2030, supporting the transition towards a gas-based economy
    • The fertiliser sector is India’s largest natural-gas consuming sector.
      • Gas is an essential feedstock for ammonia and urea production, linking natural-gas availability directly with fertiliser production, agricultural productivity and food security
      • PPAC data for April–February 2024-25 shows fertiliser accounting for approximately 32% of natural-gas consumption.
    • Natural gas supports electricity generation and provides a flexible fuel for balancing variable renewable generation.
      • It is also used extensively in refineries, petrochemicals, chemicals, ceramics, glass, metals and other industries
      • In April–February 2024-25, the power sector accounted for about 14% of gas consumption, while refineries accounted for around 9%.
    • Through CNG, natural gas provides an important alternative fuel for road transport, while PNG supplies households and commercial establishments.
      • Expansion of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network therefore supports cleaner urban fuel use and reduced dependence on conventional petroleum fuels. 
    • India is developing a nationwide Natural Gas Grid, LNG infrastructure and CGD networks to improve availability and create an integrated gas market.
      • The Government has also pursued Unified Pipeline Tariff, designed around the principle of “One Nation, One Grid and One Tariff.” 
    • Natural gas is strategically important precisely because India has limited domestic availability relative to demand.
      • LNG imports therefore remain important for meeting consumption, making India vulnerable to international gas prices, shipping costs, geopolitical disruptions and exchange-rate movements
      • Expanding domestic exploration, unconventional gas, biogas/CBG and infrastructure can strengthen energy security.
