About the Golden Globe Awards
- Introduction: The Golden Globe Awards stand among the most recognised honours in the entertainment world. The awards acknowledge artistic achievement in cinema, and television categories. It is an annual event and acts as an indicator of industry trends.
- Presented By: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) used to present the Golden Globe Awards, but the HFPA was dissolved in 2023 after controversies. The awards are now managed by Dick Clark Productions (a Eldridge Industries company), with the 2024-25 nominations/ceremonies.
- Evolution: The awards were established in 1943 by HFPA. The first Golden Globes awards ceremony was an informal dinner held in January 1944 at the 20th Century Fox studios. The event grew over the decades, becoming an annual formal ceremony.
- Award Categories: The Golden Globes organise their awards into two main sectors: film and television.
-
-
- Motion Picture Categories (Film): The film categories recognize a range of narratives. Categories include Best Motion Picture for Drama, Musical or Comedy, Non-English Language, and Animated films, as well as awards for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Director, Screenplay, Original Score, and Original Song. Acting awards are given for Best Performance by a Female or Male Actor in Drama and Musical or Comedy films, and for Female or Male Actors in Supporting Roles.
- Television Categories: Television categories cover drama, musical/comedy, and limited series. These include Best Television Series for Drama and Musical or Comedy, and Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Acting honors are awarded for Best Performance by a Female or Male Actor in Drama, Musical or Comedy, and Limited Series, as well as for Supporting Roles on Television and Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
- Other Categories: There are also categories for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television and the new Best Podcast award. Two non-competitive lifetime achievement awards: the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film and the Carol Burnett Award for television.
-
- Eligibility: Eligibility rules follow a yearly cycle. Films must release within the calendar year, either in theatres or through approved distribution platforms.
- A qualifying theatrical film must have a minimum release in the Los Angeles area with at least 70 minutes long duration.
- Television shows must air during the same year and must be produced or distributed for broadcast, cable, or streaming platforms.
-
-
- TV programs must be first broadcast in the U.S. during primetime hours, defined as between 8 PM and 11 PM.
- An actor in a television series must appear in at least six episodes during the qualification year to be considered for an individual award.
-
- Foreign-language films can originate from any country and must contain more than 50 percent non-English dialogue.
-
-
- For TV films or miniseries, an actor must appear for at least 5% of the total screen time.
-
- Voting Rules: The Golden Globes nominations and winners are determined by a single, independent body of approximately 300 international journalist voters. The process involves two stages:
-
- Stage 1: The entire body of international journalist voters receives ballots and a list of eligible films and TV programs. Each voter selects their top five choices in each category, ranking them from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). The five selections that receive the most votes in each category become the official nominees.
- Stage 2: The same body of international journalist voters receives a final ballot listing the nominees. Each voter selects their single top choice for each category from the list of nominees. The winner in each category is selected by a plurality vote.
