Why in News? 

Recently, Raja Ravi Varma’s iconic oil painting “Yashoda and Krishna” was sold for a record ₹167.2 crore at auction, becoming the most expensive Indian artwork ever.

  • It surpassed the previous record of ₹118 crore held by M.F. Husain’s “Gram Yatra“.

Who was Raja Ravi Varma?

  • Intro: Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was one of India’s most celebrated painters, known for blending Indian mythology with European realism. He is regarded as the ‘Father Of Modern Indian Art’, who gave visual form to gods and epics. 
  • Early Life: He was born on 29 April 1848 in Kilimanoor Palace, Travancore (Kerala) and belonged to an aristocratic family. 
    • From childhood, he showed exceptional artistic talent, drawing with charcoal on walls. 
    • His uncle Raja Raja Varma recognized his skills and guided his early learning.
  • Training: He received patronage from Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal and trained under Ramaswamy Naidu in watercolors.
    • Later, he learned oil painting techniques by observing European artist Theodore Jensen, which helped him master Western academic realism.
  • Career: Varma began his career around 1870 with commissioned portraits. He soon became a royal court painter and gained popularity among Indian princes and British elites.  
    • He received major commissions from the Maharajas of Baroda and Mysore to paint portraits and elaborate mythological series.
  • Contribution: He produced around 7,000 paintings, covering portraits, landscapes, and mythological themes. 
    • He was among the first Indian artists to use oil paints and introduced realistic depictions of Hindu deities, transforming Indian visual culture.
    • He introduced chiaroscuro (light and shade), depth, and lifelike expressions, while maintaining Indian themes and cultural symbolism.
    • In 1894, he established a lithographic printing press, enabling mass production of paintings (oleographs). This innovation brought art into ordinary households, making him a pioneer in democratizing Indian art.
    • He is widely regarded as the most important representative of the Europeanised school of painting in India.
    • Despite criticism for Western influence, his legacy remains strong, influencing cinema, calendars, and popular culture.
    • His depictions of goddesses remain iconic in modern calendar art, advertisements, and popular comic series like Amar Chitra Katha.
  • Famous Paintings: Some of his most iconic works include “Shakuntala Looking for Dushyanta,” “Damayanti Talking to a Swan,” “Nair Lady Adorning Her Hair,” and “Shantanu and Matsyagandha.” These paintings vividly portray epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. 
  • Recognition: Varma received international awards, including medals at Vienna (1873) and Chicago Exhibition (1893), Governor’s Gold Medal in Madras (1873) and the Kaiser-i-Hind Award (1904), where the title “Raja” was first officially used for him.
    • In 2013, a crater on the planet Mercury was named in honour of the renowned Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma, by International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Features of Iconic “Yashoda and Krishna” Oil Painting

  • Core Theme: The painting Yashoda and Krishna by Raja Ravi Varma is centered on the universal theme of maternal love (Vatsalya Rasa). It is 35 x 28.25-inch oil on canvas painting created in the 1890s.
    • It transforms a mythological narrative into an emotionally relatable human moment.
    • The artwork is rooted in Hindu Puranic traditions, especially the Bhagavata Purana, depicting Yashoda as Krishna’s foster mother
    • It reflects the cultural narrative of Krishna’s childhood in Gokul, emphasizing devotion and familial bonding.
  • Representation: The painting captures a domestic rural scene, where Maa Yashoda is engaged in milking, while infant Krishna interacts playfully holding his mother, while reaching for a goblet of milk. This storytelling approach makes mythology accessible and lifelike.
    • Maa Yashoda is depicted wearing a rich green blouse and deep blue-golden sari, symbolizing prosperity, motherhood, and cultural identity.
    • Krishna appears as an innocent child adorned with traditional jewellery, including anklets and ornaments.
    • The painting represents intense emotional expression of mother-child bond, highlighting unconditional love, care, and protection
  • Techniques: The artwork uses oil-on-canvas technique (c. 1901), key techniques include chiaroscuro (light–shadow contrast), depth, anatomical precision, and texture detailing, which create a three-dimensional effect.
  • National Treasure: This artwork is recognized as a “national treasure” and registered antiquity, meaning it holds legal protection and cannot be exported freely, must remain within India’s borders.
  • Significance: It is often referred to as the “Mona Lisa of Indian Art” and is considered one of Varma’s most accomplished works.

Major Record-Breaking Indian Paintings:

  • Untitled (Gram Yatra) – M. F. Husain: This iconic 1954 modernist painting previously held the record, selling for around ₹118 crore (2025). It reflects rural India and cultural narratives, marking the strong position of modern Indian art in global auctions. 
  • The Story Teller – Amrita Sher-Gil: One of the most valuable works by Sher-Gil, this painting fetched ₹61.8 crore (2023). Its rarity and focus on Indian rural life and women make it highly prized among collectors.
  • Trussed Bull – Tyeb Mehta: This expressionist masterpiece also reached around ₹61.8 crore, symbolizing post-independence trauma and existential themes, making Mehta one of India’s most expensive modern artists. 
  • Untitled (1970s Work) – V. S. Gaitonde: A minimalist abstract painting sold for about ₹67.8 crore, showcasing the global appreciation for Indian abstract art and Gaitonde’s meditative visual language.
