Who is Ajit Kumar Doval?

  • Intro: Ajit Kumar Doval is India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) and one of the country’s most experienced intelligence professionals.
    • He advises the Prime Minister on national security, defence, strategic affairs, and foreign policy
    • He has served as NSA since 30 May 2014.
  • Early Life: He was born on 20 January 1945 in Pauri Garhwal, then in the United Provinces (now Uttarakhand).
    • His father, Major Gunanand Doval, served in the Indian Army, influencing his interest in national service.
  • Education: Doval completed his schooling at Ajmer Military School (now Rashtriya Military School, Ajmer).
    • He earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Agra University.
  • Civil Services: He joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1968 from the Kerala cadre
  • Career: Doval served in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for over three decades. He handled sensitive counter-terrorism and held the post of Director, Intelligence Bureau (IB) in 2004-05.

    • Operation Black Thunder-II (1988): He secretly entered the Golden Temple in Amritsar by pretending to be a Pakistani agent. He gathered vital information about the militants hiding inside. His undercover work helped the Indian military.
    • Mizoram Crisis Management: He played a major role in bringing peace to Mizoram by negotiating the Mizo Peace Accord in 1986. He successfully convinced the top leaders of the rebel group, the Mizo National Front, to stop fighting.
      • Years later, in 1999, he also served as India’s main negotiator during the tense Kandahar plane hijacking crisis.
    • Doklam Standoff (2017): He served as India’s special representative during border talks with China. He held firm and steady diplomatic meetings with Chinese officials to defuse the situation. His strong leadership successfully ended a tense 73-day military standoff without any breakout of war.
    • Updated Anti-Terrorism Policy: He shifted India’s security strategy to a bold new approach called the defensive-offensive doctrine.
      • Under this plan, India stopped just defending itself and began striking back against terrorist threats. 
      • This policy directly led to the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes.
  • Honors: He is the first police officer in Indian history to receive the Kirti Chakra. This award is normally given only to military personnel for exceptional gallantry.

  • Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856–1920) was a freedom fighter, scholar, journalist, lawyer, and political leader
  • He transformed India’s freedom struggle from an elite movement into a mass national movement. The title “Lokmanya” means “accepted by the people“. 
  • Tilak was born on 23 July 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. His original name was Keshav Gangadhar Tilak. His father, Gangadhar Pant Tilak, was a respected Sanskrit scholar and teacher.
  • In 1884, Tilak co-founded the Deccan Education Society and helped establish the New English School. He promoted modern education rooted in Indian culture.
