The government appointed Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), succeeding Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh.

Appointment of Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit as IAF Chief

  • Appointment: The Government of India has appointed Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff (CAS). He will assume office in the rank of Air Chief Marshal.
    • He assumed Vice Chief of the Air Staff position on 1 July 2026, succeeding Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor.
  • Effective Date: Dixit’s appointment takes effect from the afternoon of 31 October 2026. 
  • Succession: Dixit will succeed Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, who has served as the IAF Chief since 30 September 2024 and superannates on 31 October 2026.

  • Commission: Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit was born on 9 December 1966. He was commissioned into the Fighter Stream of the Indian Air Force on 6 December 1986, beginning a career that has now extended across approximately four decades.
  • Qualifications: Dixit is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA).
    • He subsequently completed the Staff Course in Bangladesh and graduated from the National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi.
    • He is an Experimental Test Pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor, with more than 3,500 flying hours.
      • His flying experience spans fighters, trainers and transport aircraft.
      • His flying portfolio includes the Mirage-2000, MiG variants, HPT-32, An-32, Avro, Kiran, Jaguar, IL-78, Hawk and Tejas. 
  • Command Experience: As a commanding officer, he re-equipped No. 9 Squadron with Mirage-2000.
    • He subsequently commanded a frontline fighter air base in the Western Sector and a premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector.
  • Operational Experience: His operational record includes Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil conflict and Operation Rakshak.
    • His later career also includes participation in Cope India and Operation Sindoor, linking his experience with both conventional and contemporary air operations.
  • Appointments: At Air Headquarters, Dixit served as Principal Director, Air Staff Requirements, Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Projects) and Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Plans).
    • He served as Air Defence Commander, Southern Air Command, Senior Air Staff Officer, South Western Air Command, and later Deputy Chief of the Air Staff. 
    • Dixit subsequently became Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Air Command, followed by Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee.
      • He worked on jointness, integration and multi-domain defence coordination.
    • On 1 July 2026, he became Vice Chief of the Air Staff, immediately preceding his appointment as CAS. 
  • Military Decorations: His decorations include the Vayu Sena Medal (2006), Vishisht Seva Medal (2011), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2023) and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2026).

  • About: The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) is the professional head of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the senior-most serving officer responsible for functioning of the IAF.
    • The office is institutionally linked to the Air Force Act, 1950. 
  • Constitutional Position: India’s armed forces operate under the constitutional framework in which the President is the Supreme Commander.
    • The Air Force Regulations state that the CAS is responsible to the President through the Central Government for the administration and organisation of the Air Force.

    • He initially served as Commander-in-Chief; following the Commanders-in-Chief (Change in Designation) Act, 1955, the designation became Chief of the Air Staff. 
  • Responsibilities: The CAS is responsible for the administration, organisation, operational preparedness, capability development and professional functioning of the IAF.
    • The role encompasses force modernisation, training, personnel management, operational planning, logistics and maintaining combat readiness. 
    • Today, the CAS also has major responsibilities concerning air and space capabilities, network-centric warfare, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, indigenous platforms, integrated air defence and joint operations.
