Successful DRDO Pralay Missile Test, Tactical Deterrence and Defence Capability Boost

General Studies Paper III: Defence Technology, Indigenous Technology

Why in News?

Recently, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested the indigenous Pralay quasi-ballistic missile on 5 November 2026, off Odisha.

What is Pralay Quasi-Ballistic Missile?

  • About: Pralay is an indigenous, canisterised surface-to-surface short-range tactical quasi-ballistic missile that travels on a low-altitude trajectory and.
    • Unlike conventional ballistic missiles following relatively predictable trajectories, it can manoeuvre during flight, making interception by enemy air and missile defence systems more difficult.
    • Its primary objective is to execute high-precision conventional strikes against critical enemy infrastructure, including command centers, airbases, logistics hubs, and radar installations.
  • Developed By: The system is indigenously designed and developed in India by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)—specifically through Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad—alongside industrial partners Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
  • Origin: The Pralay project was sanctioned in March 2015. Its development draws upon technologies associated with DRDO’s Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) and Prahaar missile programmes.
    • The missile has progressed through trials and is currently in its user evaluation phase, with formal induction into the Indian Army and Indian Air Force nearing completion as part of the projected Integrated Rocket Force.
  • Propulsion System: It is powered by a solid-propellant rocket motor, which allows launchers to stay in a prolonged ready-to-launch state and deliver rapid-fire responses on short notice.
  • Technical Specifications: The system weighs approximately 5 tonnes, spans 7.5–11 meters in length, and carries a 350–1000 kg conventional warhead payload (HEPF, PCB, RDPS). It uses INS and MMW DSMAC/Radar imaging to achieve a circular error probable (CEP) of under 10 meters.
  • Range: The missile features an operational strike range of 150 to 500 km.
  • Advanced Capabilities: Key features include hypersonic-level terminal speeds reaching Mach 6.1, mid-flight evasive maneuvering to defeat enemy interceptors, and high mobility via a road-mobile Ashok Leyland 12×12 HMV TEL launcher.
  • Successful Flight Tests:
    • DRDO successfully conducted the first flight test from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha in December 2021.
    • On 29 July 2025, DRDO successfully conducted two consecutive flight tests to validate the missile’s maximum- and minimum-range capabilities.
    • On 31 December 2025, DRDO successfully launched two Pralay missiles in quick succession from the same launcher off Odisha.
    • DRDO executed a major user evaluation flight test on 5 November 2026.
      • Launched from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha with tracking support from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, the trial met all designated mission parameters, confirming that military induction is imminent.

Significance of Pralay Quasi-Ballistic Missile

  • Defence Self-Reliance: Pralay represents India’s progress towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.
    • Its indigenous design, development and production reduces dependence on foreign tactical missile technologies.
    • It strengthens India’s domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
  • Strengthening Conventional Deterrence: The missile enhances India’s conventional deterrence capabilities by providing precision-strike options against hostile military infrastructure.
    • It strengthens India’s military preparedness along sensitive borders with China and Pakistan.
    • Its conventional warhead capability offers military planners additional response options below the nuclear threshold, supporting India’s broader strategic deterrence framework.
  • Strategic Applications: Pralay can engage strategically important targets, including enemy airfields, radar installations, command-and-control centres, communication facilities, ammunition depots and military infrastructure.
    • Its precision-strike capability can disrupt enemy operational planning, logistics and battlefield coordination.
    • Its mobility allows deployment across different operational theatres.
    • Its development is relevant to the requirements of both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force.
    • Its advanced design has opened doors for export negotiations with global partners, enhancing India’s status as an emerging security provider.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

1. When and where did DRDO successfully test the Pralay missile?

DRDO successfully tested Pralay on 5 November 2026, at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off Odisha’s coast.

2. What is the Pralay quasi-ballistic missile?

Pralay is an indigenous, solid-propellant, surface-to-surface conventional missile designed for precision strikes against high-value military targets.

3. What are the key features and capabilities of the Pralay missile?

It features 150–500 km range, advanced guidance, manoeuvrability, solid propulsion and multiple conventional warhead options for precision targeting.

4. Which organisations developed the Pralay missile?

DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, and other DRDO laboratories developed it, while BDL and BEL supported production.

5. How will Pralay strengthen the capabilities of the Indian Army and Air Force?

It will enhance both services’ precision-strike capabilities, enabling rapid attacks against enemy airfields, command centres and critical military infrastructure.

6. What is the difference between a quasi-ballistic missile and a conventional ballistic missile?

Conventional ballistic missiles follow largely predictable arcs; quasi-ballistic missiles fly lower and manoeuvre, complicating enemy tracking and interception.
